The Horrors

The horrors were everywhere. All around you. Everywhere you looked, every person you saw, everyone you spoke to was dealing with an insurmountable amount of horrors, and there was nothing you could do to help them.

You tried, you tried to help everyone, you tried to help with everything, but you spread yourself too thin and nothing did much good. And when you realised there was nothing concrete you could do you tried to witness, to ensure that people knew that you knew about their horrors, that they weren't suffering invisibly. You made sure you were suffering along with them.

But the horrors persisted, because you never did anything to stop them.

And when you finally realised your folly, that adding to your own suffering was not helping anyone, and that trying to help everyone ensured you helped no-one, not even yourself, you stepped away. You stopped your doomscrolling. You stopped your internet activism. You found something small that you could do in your own life that would help, one thing of your own that you could focus on, and you knew that if everyone did the same we could beat this thing, these horrors. We could win.
